Update~ Under Construction Part II

Update~ Under Construction Part II

We survived “Carpet-Palooza” last week.  It was a long day and I felt like a giant Swiffer dust rag when it all wrapped up shortly after 7pm.  Last June, in Blog #59~The Sleuth Detective, I wrote about things that just disappeared into a black hole around the house.  I do have some good news of some recovered items!

black hole

Two Nick’s iPods were recovered from the deep recesses 🙂 Oh and a bunch of toys that our cat, Miss Mellie had batted around and got trapped behind the settee in the dining room.

Now you see why I felt like a giant Swiffer cloth 🙂

Nick got home from school and saw the mayhem, his first reaction was to say, “Wow!”

IMG950319

The foreman of the Lowes carpet crew took one look at Nick and said, “I remember, doing this house now.” (He had done the basement after the reconstruction from the flooding in April.) I wasn’t surprised, Nick can leave a lasting impression.

Nick squeezed his way into the kitchen and was delighted to see all the treasures that had been buried…….

IMG950316

As I continued to clean up the silk plants that pretty much serve the function of being dust catchers, I caught Nick out of the corner of my eye.  He was throwing the cat toys at the carpet crew.  As my friend, Kendra put it, “Nothing says welcome to my crib like getting hit upside the head with a cat toy.”  As I mentioned, Nick can leave a lasting impression. Down syndrome and autism can be so much fun! 🙂  The Lowes carpet crew had a good laugh and appreciated his lively spirit.

The day rolled out nicely and the carpet looks wonderful!  Here’s Nick’s crib, it looks brand new……

IMG950324

I am slowly peeling away through the boxes that I had to shove into the guest bathroom and out in the garage.  They are filled with the breakables, knick knacks and all the stuff that was on the closet floors. I’m taking it one box at a time and will be making my third trip to AMVETS with donations.  The silver lining; getting new carpeting does make you organize and clean out unwanted items.  Speaking of AMVETS, here’s to our brave veterans today!

veterans day

That’s what is in my noggin this week.  Stay tuned for next week’s topic about communication and social skills as it relates to autism! 🙂

Nick got a bad stomach bug last weekend which made it’s way through the family.  We are all feeling much better now and look forward to sharing more with you on Monday!

Last week Nick finally got the staff at the new post-secondary transition program he is in (STEPS).  Quite frankly I am surprised they made it a whole month before he beat them to it!

Blog #68~Hardy Har Har 2

Blog #68~ Hardy Har Har 2

Sometimes I think Nick would rather tease than eat.  Well, unless it’s a big bowl of pasta, then all bets are off.  Having a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism has made it difficult for him to verbalize speech.  It hasn’t stopped him from showing his funny side.  In Blog #39~Hardy Har Har, I explored Nick’s his sense of humor. Check this blog out @https://nickspecialneeds.wordpress.com/2013/01/28/blog-39hardy-har-har-nick/  This week I have some new gems to share.

Silly guy wearing the blue blanket on his head 🙂

He knows he is going to get a laugh out of me here….

Plunk, this is funny stuff….

Ha, good one Nick. Way to drop the lime in the pasta water….

Uh oh, another dribble from the second floor stairwell…In Blog #3~Getting Your Goat, you can see a lot more of these. Check it out @https://nickspecialneeds.wordpress.com/2012/04/17/blog-3-getting-your-goat/

photo (20)

I try to stay one step ahead of him but it’s not easy.  His latest trick is to push the spout on the coffee maker and let it the hot, brown stream run over the counter and trickle down the white cabinet drawers leaving a puddle on the floor.  He also has taken to dropping toys, remotes, phones and an assortment of things behind the flat screen TV.  One thing that is helping is to catch him before he commits the act.  I show him this icon quickly before he initiates the problem behavior.  It seems to be helping him to regulate those impulses.

angry face

In addition, I use the happy face icon to catch him being good as often as I can…..

happy face

Like when he is unloading the dishwasher (and wearing my high heels)  hardy, har har Nick…..

photo (28)

Finding ways for Nick to get attention appropriately also helps keep his behavior in check.  I am always stocking up on fun things for him….

photo (24)

My friend, Kelli found this cool light up ring.  Nick took a fancy to it….

photo (26)

I looked over a few minutes later and saw that he had made it a toe ring…. 🙂

And who doesn’t crack up over a bloody hand….

Hope you enjoyed the light hearted fare this week.  I feel very blessed that Nick is so happy. Yes, his antics drive us bonkers and wear on our nerves.  But he brings a great light and humor to each day. Hey, its Nick’s world….the rest of us are just trying to keep up.  That’s what is in my noggin this week! 🙂

Blog #63~Furry Family Members

Blog #63~Furry Family Members

It is with great sadness that I begin this piece by telling you that our cat of 17 years has passed away.  She has been such a part of our family history and will be dearly missed.

I posted this picture on Facebook last Saturday and received so many thoughtful sentiments.  I often post pictures and updates about Miss Mellie.  It appears she had quite a following……..

photo (115) (2)

I loved her from afar.”

“She warmed the hearts of many of us on Facebook too.”

“Miss Mellie stories have been endearing and a bright spot in my week.”

“We take in theses wonderful animals, love them, take care of them and they become part of our family. Part of our daily routine, part of our home and part of our life. When they are gone it is like an emptiness that is hard to explain to someone who doesn’t have a pet. But those of us who do…we understand your pain and wish we could help you. miss seeing her face.”

“So sad, I will miss the Mellie stories.”

“Oh, I am so sorry. A furry loss is a tough one.”

Our son, Nick who has Down syndrome and autism had a lot of fun with Miss Mellie over the years.  If you are a regular follower of the blog you know about a lot of the pranks he has pulled on her.  Nick’s antics have given me enough material to write two blogs, Stuff on My Cat (Blog #33 located in the December 2012 archives) and Stuff on My Cat, Part II (located in the July 2013 archives.)  Here are the last two things he put on our sweet, gray tabby 🙂

Oh no, looks like Miss Mellie is getting some deep pressure with the therapy ball….

photo (123)

On our cross country move from Livermore, California here to the Chicagoland area we stopped for the night in Reno. Six year old Nick decided to do a little “Magic Mike” action for Miss Mellie.  I don’t think she was too impressed……..

Scan0001

A sweet moment between Nick and our cat. By the way, he hasn’t handed me the icon picture of her out of his PECS communication book yet.  But I know he will soon.  That moment will be a tearful one for me 😦

photo (119)

She shared so much love with our family and friends. She adored being in Hank’s arms and seem to comfortably nestle there……

photo (116)

Snuggled in with Al, she was a good lap cat…..

She insisted on being on my lap, helping me to write 🙂

photo (129)

I will miss so many things about our cat like how she follows the sun beams throughout the day and running into the kitchen whenever she heard the can opener, tuna!…….

photo (124)

photo (115)

How she parked herself in front of the fireplace during the winter months waiting for  the hearth to be prepared for her……

photo (122)

Most of all I will miss our lap time together, the sound of her purring, her warmth and the love that she gave all of us. Thank you KB (my cat loving friend), for framing this picture and giving it to me last Christmas.  I will cherish it always…….

Blog #61~Stuff On My Cat Part II

Blog #61~ Stuff on my Cat Part II

Stuff + Cats= Awesome

stuff on my cat book

That’s the motto for the internet phenomenon called “Stuff on my cat.”  Here’s what Amazon wrote about this book by Mario Garza:

“It began with a handful of digital photographs of office supplies, toys, and spare computer parts thoughtfully placed on Mario Garza’s snoozing cat, Love. Over time, the objects became bigger: remote controls, shoes, empty pizza boxes. And then cat owners everywhere were sucked into the Internet phenomenon that is defined by a simple motto: stuff + cats = awesome.  Culled from the thousands of outrageous photographs submitted by mischievous animal lovers, here are 200 of the most unbelievably entertaining images of cats with all manner of things on them: wigs, Easter eggs, dogs, cheeseburgers, cookware, gummi bears, action figures, tiaras, beer cans, pinecones, a statue of the Buddha, and much more. An introduction by the site’s creator explains the Stuff on My Cat philosophy, and playful illustrations and graphics are sprinkled throughout.”

In Blog #33~Stuff On My Cat (located in the December 2012 Archives), I wrote and shared numerous pictures of random objects we put on our cats over the years.  Why do we do this?  I have to embrace Mario Garza’s philosophy to answer this one.  Our cats rule the house.  Sleeping all day long wherever the sun radiates, claiming the fresh, warm laundry as their “personal paradise” and plopping on your lap even if you just want to sit down for a second.

God forbid you disturb them.  I have to contort my legs with bizarre yoga moves  slinking out of bed so as not to disturb her slumber. She wields her power at 5:00 a.m. letting out piercing cries and meows that sound as if you haven’t fed her in a week.  So, why put stuff on our cats?  Mario Garza is right on his philosophy:  “There is a very satisfying shift of power going on.  Now I’m in control when I sneak up behind her while she naps and put a pancake on top of her head-checkmate.” 🙂

Nick loves to do this too,  he is 19 and has Down syndrome and autism.  Here are some of the stunts he’s pulled on our 16+ year old  tabby……..

Mellie has some company, Nick’s plush animals and a Taco Bell dog….

photo (122)

Another deluge of toys along with a package of microwave popcorn…..

photo (128)

Mellie is trying to relax in her 1:00 p.m. sun spot.  Nick had other ideas his PECS icons, (Picture Exchange System.) I think he was communicating that he missed his brother, Hank and friend/respite worker, Bobby……

photo (123)

Apparently Nick thinks Mellie is expecting an important call…. 🙂

photo (119)

More fun with PECS icons….Nick mapped out his agenda last Friday…….

photo (124)

“Oh Kitty, go get me some Sprite please!”

photo (127)

I get a kick out of how creative Nick is and appreciate his mischievous side.  Here is one of Nick who had been “stimming” (a trait of autism) with my makeup mirror. He fell asleep next to the cat who had melded herself to a warm towel out of  the dryer…… apparently the cat doesn’t hold a grudge….. 🙂

Speaking of being mischievous, here are a couple I did.  Oh I just can’t resist every once in awhile…. hee, hee, hee…… 🙂

Hope you enjoyed the second installment of stuff on my cat.  Next week I will get back to part two of “Wandering and Autism”.  Sometimes its fun to be mischievous. That’s what is in my noggin this week, meow!

Blog #59~ The Sleuth Detective

Blog #59~ The Sleuth Detective

The iPod has disappeared, here we go again…..geesh.  One of the many “gifts” that Nick has given me besides razor sharp reflexes is a keen eye as a sleuth detective.

inspector klouseau

Things have a way of vanishing into a *black hole around here.

black hole

Since Nick has Down syndrome and autism and limited verbal skills, I can’t exactly ask him to back track his steps to find his iPod.  I showed him the media bin where it’s should be kept as I signed the word, “help.”

photo (125)

Then, I pointed to the icon in his communication book asking him where is it?  I am met with a blank stare.  So, I take off to check the usual spots.  First stop, behind the couch….nada.  Next, a peer underneath my bed….nil. Now I have to do some back tracking.  When did he have his iPod last?  Over twenty minutes have past as I searched the house.  Then I remembered he was hanging out in Hank’s room.  I do a full room scan for a few minutes then zero in on the bed.  I pulled the comforter back…..bingo!

photo (121)

A few weeks ago I thought I was losing my mind.  I had a stack of letters sitting on the kitchen counter that I was going to mail the next day.  Poof, they were gone.  I sent a text to Al to see if he had mailed them…… nope.  I followed the trail again checking the usual spots….crickets……

“Oh great, now what?  Please don’t be in the trash.”

I dug my way down the garbage, picking through as coffee grounds and gunk stuck to my hands.  No luck.

detective

Finally I had one last thought.  I opened the door to the basement that is in a state of disarray after being flooded  from the spring rains in April………

photo (115)

There’s an hour of my life I will never get back.

What is the worst thing that has vanished in the black hole?  The entire contents (10 pages) filled with icons out of Nick’s communication book.  I spent a day and a half a day sniffing out every trail I could think of that Nick might have taken.  I couldn’t imagine having to make all those icons, laminate and apply the Velcro again.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

photo (116)

I went into the bathroom to see if he might have flushed them down the toilet. Well, it wouldn’t be the first time.  In Blog #21~ What is Normal?  (located in the September 2012 archives), I wrote about the time my leopard reader glasses went missing.  I always keep them next to the laptop in the same place.  The next day Sergio, our plumber was fixing a clogged toilet……

photo (113)

“I found out why your toilet was clogged. You can still wear theeeese glasses they were in clean water, not poopy water.”

Leopard readers back in it’s rightful place…..

photo (124)

The toilet flushed just fine, what a relief…..  The next day, I went to get Nick’s work bins that are stored on a high shelf in the laundry room.  I glanced inside one.  He had emptied his book one by one and put them all in here.  Whew……Thank goodness! 🙂

Communication Book restored, we dodged a bullet on that one…..

photo (123)

The phone went missing a few weeks ago. The phone is easy to find since you can hit the intercom button, but not this time.  Finally I discovered it tucked in the blue bin where I keep my blow dryer. Normally I just reach up and pull the dryer out, but last Thursday and I pulled the whole bin down.  Mystery solved, inside there it sat, the long, lost uncharged phone.

photo (122)

It seems as I write this piece there is a pattern emerging.   Nick definitely likes to drop things, but then other times he likes to put them up in those high bins. Note to self for the next thing that drops into the black hole. There are no lessons
to be learned this week.  It’s just a slice of life in Nick’s world…. The rest of us are just trying to keep up!  That’s what is in my noggin.

~Teresa

*According to Wikipedia:  “A black hole is a region of space-time from which gravity prevents anything, including light, from escaping.[1] The theory of general relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact mass will deform space-time to form a black hole. Around a black hole, there is a mathematically defined surface called an event horizon that marks the point of no return. The hole is called “black” because it absorbs all the light that hits the horizon, reflecting nothing, just like a perfect black body in thermodynamics.”

Blog #56~ Cap and Gown…. or just gown?

Blog #56~ Cap and Gown…. or just gown?

I unfurled the gown and hung it up so the crease marks would begin to loosen.  While the iron warm up I took a look at the cap and tassel and put it on my head.

“Hmmmmmm, ten bucks that’s not going to stay on Nick’s head.”

If you think about it the graduation cap is a silly looking thing.  You try to walk and the tassel is bouncing around, dangling in your face.  The hat never sits firmly on your head.  Who came up with such a dumb looking cap for such a scholarly milestone?  Here are a few facts I pulled off of Wikipedia about the cap and gown:

cap and gown

Graduation portrait of Linus Pauling wearing a mortarboard, 1922

“The square academic cap, graduate cap, or mortarboard] (because of its similarity in appearance to the hawk used by bricklayers to hold mortar) or Oxford cap, is an item of academic head dress consisting of a horizontal square board fixed upon a skull-cap, with a tassel attached to the center. In the UK and the US, it is commonly referred to the mortarboard is generally believed by scholars to have developed from the biretta, a similar-looking hat worn by Roman Catholic clergy. The biretta itself may have been a development of the Roman pileus quadratus, a type of skullcap with superposed square and tump.”

I wasn’t sure what moment the tissues would be needed that day.  It happened when I got down the stairs holding the freshly pressed gown.  I saw the family gathered in the living room then it hit me. Gulp, eyes welled up with tears.  So much had happened in the last 19 years to get Nick to this day.

photo (116)

photo (119)

Armed with an icon strip I made early that morning, we dropped Nick off with Miss R, his teacher.

photo (115)

We waited anxiously for the moment when Nick would be walking in with his senior class.  The processional-*Pomp and Circumstance always gets to me. It’s a powerful song that never ceases to put a lump in my throat, symbolizing pride and valor and victory.  We waited as the classmates fill in the rows of chairs, knowing that with our last name it would be awhile.  Then he appeared…….Big guy Nick!

IMG-20130526-00100 (2)

The first thing I noticed was that he wasn’t wearing his cap….. shocker, right 🙂  He followed the line compliantly with his bare head and distinctive double cowlicks.  I couldn’t help but see how much shorter he stood next to his peers.  At least we could spot him easily amongst the 600+ students.

IMG-20130526-00101

I guess we didn’t need to waste that Google search on whether the tassel is worn on the left or right side. 🙂

IMG-20130526-00105

The senior reflection address given by the Salutatorian made mention of one thing that caught our attention.  “Metea Valley Class of 2013, we have been pioneers for the last four years.  Together we have survived the ACT’s and the winter fire drills of 2009….”  Looks like Nick indirectly got a shout out. 🙂

scan0001

Considering the size of his class, the ceremony moved swiftly as the roll came from two sides in rapid fire. Nick made his way up to the podium to accept his diploma.  So far so good!  Wait, not so fast……plop there goes the diploma.  The person presenting the diploma picked it up and handed it back to Nick who proceeded to drop it a second time.  Then, as Nick reached the stairs at the end of the stage, he tossed it to the floor.  By now there was a log jam of students lining up behind him trying to get back to their row of seats.  Well, at least he sat quietly and was appropriate through the rest of the ceremony.  Plus, we dodged the DeKalb Fire Department getting called to the scene. All in all, it was a grand day full of family, love, laughter and wait for it…….

You guessed it, chocolate cake!

photo (121)

It was a blessing to have my family in from Texas.  Thanks to Babs, my mom, Laura, Scott, Jenna and Jake for making the trek up.  Al’s parents Jim and Theresa were also a part of the celebration.  Milestones such as graduations much like birthdays are benchmarks to pause and look back at the life we have lived.  If you haven’t read Blog #41~Back to the Future, located in the February 2013 archives I would highly recommend you doing so (don’t forget to grab the tissues.)  Having a child who has Down syndrome and autism has been full of challenges.  His obstacles have been enormous.  Hundreds of hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy, 17 IEP meetings along with blood sweat and tears have molded Nick into the young man that he was meant to be.

scan0016

It’s been one heck of a ride, and I couldn’t be more proud of Big Guy!  That’s what is in my noggin this week. 🙂

*”Pomp and Circumstance” was composed by Sir Edward Elgar (b. 6/2/1857 d. 2/26/1934). “Pomp and Circumstance” was first performed on October 19, 1901 in Liverpool, England. As the students commence onto the stage they are handed their diplomas and given a handshake. It is at that point the students flip the tassels on their hats.

Blog #55~School Days

Blog #55~ School Days

I can’t believe tomorrow is Nick’s last day of school.  He graduates from high school on Sunday.  Recently after our basement flooded, I was going through some wet boxes and found my old “school days” book. I flipped through the yellow pages looking at pictures and my vital statistics (height, weight, activities, awards and achievements.)

Nice handwriting there, T…… 🙂

photo (115)

This prompted me to share some school day pictures of Nick.  I pulled out his box of memorabilia from his closet.  Nestled inside I found his old baby blanket, christening candle, artwork, an autographed baseball and  his book.

photo (116)

There’s just one problem.  I only filled out first grade, the rest well……crickets….chirp…

Here are some of Nick’s school Portraits  over the years 🙂

In many pictures, Nick smiles with his eyes…… As Tyra Banks calls it “smizing” 😉

The awkward early pre-teen years… Don’t we all have one we’d rather  leave stuffed in the drawer?

scan0008

Speaking of awkward, check out this mug shot from freshman year.  None of my family has seen this one. This photo package remains fully in tact stuffed in a shoe box.

scan0009

It’s never easy to get a good photograph of Nick.  Trying to get him to look into the camera, smile, keep his hands from flapping is a daunting task. Having Down syndrome and autism makes for some interesting stories.  If you haven’t read Blog #5~Ready, Set, Action- Check it out ( June 2012 archives). It’s a classic Nick story 🙂

High School ……He’s getting bigger, and it looks like I should have run the Norelco over his stubble…..

Hope you enjoyed a look back at Nick.  My how he has grown. If you want to see Nick’s senior portrait you’ll have to wait until next week.  I think this blog just became Nick’s school days book.  That’s what is in my noggin this week!

Blog #47~Easter thru the Years

Blog #47~ Easter thru the Years

I love holiday traditions.  Growing up each holiday was filled with many rituals that I carried over with my own family.  At Easter, Mom would pull out all the coffee mugs and prepare each by dropping in a tablet out of the Paas egg dye kit.

Paas Easter Dye

Our tiny, shaking hands would carefully balance the egg on the wire ring and dip it into the rainbow of colors filled in each mug. I always made one like the Sprite “limon” commercials.

Sprite limon

Of course my older brother, Tom would always take one egg and be sure to dip it in every single mug.  The end result was a gross, olive hued mess that he was quite proud of.

The next morning we would put on our Easter outfits.  After church we would pause for a quick photograph before we started the egg hunt in our backyard. Mom’s handy work as a seamstress is unmatched.  Of course, no outfit would be complete without the white, patent leather shoes. Just don’t wear them after Labor day. 🙂

Me and sis in matching dresses my mom sewed.  That’s Bo, our Border Collie in the background…

scan0024

The Easter bunny would leave a basket for each of us filled with plastic, green grass.  Mom hated that fake grass. It would get all over the house and she probably cursed it for months afterwards.  The baskets would brim with  jelly beans, tiny bright colored chocolate eggs and the hallowed Russell Stover filled eggs….

Nummy…..

Russell Stover egg

After raiding the baskets, we would change into shorts and spend all afternoon hiding and re-hiding the eggs.

Years later with my own boys in Houston, I carried on the traditions of dying eggs and Easter egg hunts. Here is the first Easter for Nick who is two months old.  I had to hold him up in a coccon because he was so floppy.  You can really see the low muscle tone (a trait of having Down syndrome) in his scrawny legs. His brother, Hank (21 months old) looks thrilled to be wearing that stuffy bow tie and suspenders.

scan0026

Nick just over a year old with Easter Bunny, he’s growing…..

scan0027

Hank with Paw Paw Tommy and Grandma Babs, all prepped for egg coloring….. Yes I still made the  “limon” egg and Hank took over making the gross egg like my brother use to do.

scan0028

Hank (5) and Nick (3)….

scan0029

After Texas, we moved to California and still had our holiday rituals….

scan0031

Easter Morning in California, Nick is getting bigger!

scan0030

This Easter egg hunt was the following year.  We had it out amongst the dunes at Hilton Head Island, SC. with the cousins……

scan0032

This is the first time that Nick hunted and found and egg on his own.  Way to go Nick! 🙂

scan0033

Since we moved up to the Chicagoland area the egg hunts look a lot different. The egg hunts are usually indoors because the temps are below 40 degrees.  Hank and Nick are searching at their grandparent’s house before mass….

scan0034

Hank scores some eggs! Now where is the shiny, golden egg with the $5 bill in it?

Miss Mellie looks purr-fectly wonderful!

I hope you enjoyed a look back at our Easter traditions and memories with the boys.  That’s what is in my noggin this week.

Have a blessed Easter!
